This is the most popular short Rwanda safari and the perfect introduction to gorilla trekking. You arrive in Kigali, transfer to Musanze town near Volcanoes National Park—a roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive through beautiful hillside scenery—and settle into your luxury lodge. The following morning you head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for your briefing, are assigned your gorilla family by the park rangers, and begin your trek into the forest. After your unforgettable hour with the gorillas, the afternoon is yours to relax or explore the area. On Day 3 you transfer back to Kigali for your onward flight.

5 Day Rwanda Primate Safari
If you love primates, this itinerary is crafted for you. Over five days you experience the three most sought-after primate encounters Rwanda has to offer: mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forests around the base of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes, and chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Golden monkey tracking is something many visitors overlook, and we always encourage people to include it. The experience is more active and lively than gorilla trekking, and it takes place in exactly the same volcanic forest. In Nyungwe, chimpanzee tracking starts before dawn with a 6am briefing, and you follow experienced trackers through the ancient forest until you find the chimp community.

7 Day Rwanda Wildlife Safari Circuit
This is the Rwanda safari we recommend most often to first-time visitors, and it never disappoints. Seven days gives you the time to visit all three of Rwanda’s major wildlife destinations—Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park, and Nyungwe Forest National Park—without feeling rushed through any of them.
You spend two nights at a luxury lodge near Volcanoes for gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking. Then you drive east across the country to Akagera, where two nights give you morning and evening game drives among lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos, plus a boat safari on Lake Ihema with hippos and hundreds of bird species crowding the shores. Finally, you travel south to Nyungwe for two nights of chimpanzee trekking, canopy walks, and some of the finest birdwatching in Central Africa.

10 Day Rwanda Safari with Lake Kivu
This is the one for travellers who want to go deeper and slower. You cover all three national parks — Volcanoes, Akagera, and Nyungwe — and then spend two or three nights on the shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Rift Valley lakes, shared between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This 10-day package typically costs between $4,000 and $9,000 per person all-inclusive. We also arrange the Kigali city tour on arrival, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial—a deeply important part of understanding modern Rwanda.

Multi-Country East Africa Luxury Safari

June to September and mid-December to February
These are the most popular times to visit and the best for gorilla trekking in terms of trail conditions. The forest paths are drier and easier to walk, Akagera’s shorter grass makes game viewing more productive, and the weather in Kigali is reliably clear.
The wet seasons
March to May and October to November
